Hundreds will be warmer this winter thanks to an annual effort to provide winter clothing to those struggling economically.
The North End Crime Watch and Community Development group held its 10th annual Coats for Kids drive Saturday at the Jonnycake Center, with help from center staff and the Westerly Police Department. The clothing will be distributed to families in the Westerly and Chariho area.

It's been a long time, roughly 70 years, since Carmela DeGroff moved out of her grandparents' Pierce Street home. On Saturday, she came back to see what it had become.
"I think it's very nice," she said of the affordable condominiums being built inside the century-old home she lived in until she was 9 years old. She noted the original curved windows facing the street from the third floor, the same building trim she remembered from her youth, and the wall built with slabs from her uncle's quarry. A dozen North End residents met Saturday to discuss a project geared to protect and preserve the culture of the enclave-and with that, brought memories and memorabilia from the distant past.
The North End Oral History Project, to be completed with a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, is part of the mission of the North End Crime Watch & Community Development. It may have been that he was called "Bushel" because he sold potatoes door-to-door by the bushel more than a half century ago. Or maybe, like son Ronald Sposato said, "Because he had a lot of hair."
Whatever the reason, the nickname stuck for Pasquale Sposato. And now, that moniker lives in stone, on a plaque dedicated to the memory of Pasquale "Bushel" Sposato in "Westerly's newest park" at the tiny intersection of Pierce and Lilac streets in the historic North End. After a two-year lull and pursuit of funding, work has resumed on the West Street Bridge.
Town Engineer Jonathan Pratt said Friday that workers returned to the 75-year-old North End overpass on Oct. 21. Minor demolitions are ongoing, and steel to reconstruct the bridge’s floor beams and deck is expected to be delivered in the next few weeks, he said. Click here to read The Westerly Sun article.

It’s been a year since the proposed 10-unit North Glenn Townhouse project slated for Pierce Street was blessed by Town Planning and Zoning Boards. With no shortage of bureaucratic hoops and requests for funding, the North End project is now a go with the construction phase slated to begin this summer. Senator Jack Reed, together with Town Councilor Diana Avedesian, Town Manager Joe Turo and Senator Dennis Algiere, secured $1.6 million in federal funding for the repair of the historic West Street Bridge. The federal funding will help supplement state funding to upgrade the bridge.
The 75 year old West Street Bridge, which spans the Amtrak train tracks and connects West Street to Railroad Avenue, was designated a historic structure by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission. Click here to read the full press release.

According to Park Service spokesperson, Sarah Zurrier, the National Park Service placed Westerly's historic North End on the National Register of Historic Places. Federal recognition of the 150-acre district was based on its historic architecture, community planning, ethnic heritage and industry. Click here to read The Westerly Sun article.
